The campaign of Roma women network ˝ Declare as Roma and Roma women, do not allow to be treated like the Others!
The campaign of Roma women network ˝ Declare as Roma and Roma women, do not allow to be treated like the Others!

Roma are today started their campaign before Census in Bosnia and Herzegovina, with a clear message – ˝ Declare as Roma and Roma women, do not allow to be treated like the Others! On this occasion, in the premises of the Association of Roma Women "Better Future" in Tuzlawas held a press conference at which are addressed to the press Indira Bajramovic, president of the association and director of the Institute for Statistics of the Tuzla Canton Mehmed Krajinović.

According to Indira Bajramovic, the campaign "Where are the Roma in the upcoming census in Bosnia and Herzegovina?" will last until 15 October 2013 and implemented by the Association of Roma Women "Better Future" in cooperation with the Roma women's network "Success."

The aim is to motivate the Roma population to respond to the upcoming census in Bosnia and Herzegovina proclaiming themselves to be Roma and Roma women. Were initiated also media activities, and we have recorded radio jingle and video to be shown on television. The campaign will be conducted in ten cities in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The upcoming census is a chance to change the situation of Roma people in our country, and if it comes to more massive declaration of the state will have to set aside more funds to address this population, considered Bajramovic.

We want to indicate that there are more Roma and thus ensure a better position, and also that the Constitution not be treated as the Other. Are we going to be a minority and to open the way for participation in public and political life and thus to solve many problems of Roma, she adds.

According to the census of 1991, registered a small number of those who declared themselves as Roma, a little less than 9,000 people.

From 1991st The exact number of Roma in Bosnia and Herzegovina is not known. According to the data of the Roma NGO sector in Bosnia and Herzegovina currently has 80,000 to 100,000 Roma, while the action plans for housing, employment and health care are made by much smaller numbers, and consequently a number of Roma 'invisible' in the areas of support in the realization of educational, health, housing and other human rights.

It is therefore very important that the Roma in the census identify themselves as belonging of Roma national minority.
